NTSB Recommends Complete Cell Phone Ban for Truck Drivers

Truck Driver Cell Phone Ban

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently called for a complete ban on cell phone use – both handheld and hands free - by all commercial truck and bus drivers.

Referring to distracted driving as “the new DUI”, NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said, “Distracted driving is becoming increasingly prevalent…it can be especially lethal when the distracted driver is at the wheel of a vehicle that weighs 40 tons and travels at highway speeds.”

The NTSB’s recommendation follows its investigation of a March 2010 crash that killed 11 people in Kentucky.  Investigators determined that the tractor-trailer driver who caused the accident used his mobile phone for calls and text messages a total of 69 times while driving in the 24-hour period prior to the accident.  The driver made four calls in the minutes leading up to the fatal collision.  The last call coincided with the time that the truck departed the highway.

While the NTSB does not have any rulemaking power, it can advise other agencies.  The safety board’s actions are often a catalyst for local, state and federal legislation.

Last year, the FMCSA banned truckers from text-messaging while driving, setting fines of up to $2,750. The FMCSA anticipates a rule banning truckers from using hand-held cell phones soon.

In response to the NTSB recommendation on the cell phone ban, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, "Texting or talking on the phone while driving can turn deadly in a matter of seconds, particularly when a big rig or a bus is involved. That is why the U.S. Department of Transportation has already banned commercial drivers from texting while driving and has a rulemaking underway to ban hand-held cell phone use. There is no call or text message that is worth risking lives.”

I TOTALLY agree with Mike! There is a growing trend towards the trucking industry and truckers to attack us at every turn and it is wrong.
Yes truckers screw up but look around EVERYONE HAS A PHONE TO THEIR EAR WHILE DRIVING! I know when to use it and when NOT to. Who is to say that he didnt stroke out or have a heart attack and cross the road WHILE ON the phone, no-one has all of the information, they looked at the phone logs and made a conclusion, to further their agenda. Companies are helping them steal our freedoms. Just trap you in a truck and keep you cut off from the world, sad.

...yet another reason to "just say no to Fabian Socialism." The Feds should've thought of something before the industrialists "let the cat out of the bag..." After all the money I saved just by having a phone, you couldn't pay me enough money to agree with such nonsense...

I agree with the previous comment. As a professional driver, I see more cars with people texting and on cell phones and swerving on the road than I have ever seen truckers. Also, lets keep in mind that a large number of accidents involving trucks are from cars not paying attention and cutting off trucks then breaking hard, and there is nothing a truck driver can do about that.

I appreciate all the feedback so far.

There's no question that passenger cars cause far more accidents, and tend to be distracted with cell phone use far more often than most professional truck drivers.

The problem is that the FMCSA can only regulate commercial motor vehicles.

Any other type of regulation of passenger vehicles has to come from the state or federal level.

I have blogged many articles, and read many more, about the various state laws being passed to prevent texting while driving.

There may end up being a national handheld cell phone ban, but that will likely take many years.

In the meantime, truckers will face more regulations designed to keep the highways safer.

It may not seem fair, because it still doesn't address all the other road users, but that's all the FMCSA can do at this point.

THE FMCSA ARE A GROUP OF OVER PAID PEOPLE THAT TALK ON THEIR CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING WE'LL WHAT THE F*** WE THE TRUCK DRIVERS ARE NOT A BUNCH OF SLAVES, FOCUS ON THE MF FOUR WHEELERS YOU HAVE A BUNCH OF STUPID ASS PEOPLE IN A MERGE LANE AND ARE TOO BUSY ON THE PHONE SO THEY WAIT UNTIL LAST MINUTE AND TRY TO GET OVER AND END UP IN THE GRASS OR UNDER THE TRUCK,WELL I CANTGET OVER FROM THE MIDDLE LANE BECAUSE THERE IS ANOTHER VEHICLE NEXT TO ME . CARS SPEED YOUR ASS UP OR SLOW DOWN OR GET KILLED,MORE FATAL ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY CARS THEN TRUCKS EVERY WHERE YOU LOOK YOU SEE SEVERAL CARS CRUSHED, IF THE WHOLE TRUCKING TOOK OFF 1 WEEK IT WOULD HURT THE ECONOMY MORE THEN THE STOCK MARKET BEING CLOSED FOR ONE WEEK.

nobody cares what happens to truck drivers until they don't get their shipments when they'd like.except O.I.D.A. who cares about grtting our $$$$ so they can keep us from losing all our freedoms.YEAH RIGHT!!!! I say tea party politicians are our only hope.

This is bunch @#$%. Sure ban all cell phone now. And then later, ban all CB Radio use, that's a distraction too. Better yet, Ban all talking in the truck even to your team driver.... I will just put a duct Tape over my mouth when I go down the highway in my 18 wheeler; I'm sure I will avoid a fine that way

There is always someone setting more rules for trucks and drivers and it is always people that dont know what they are doing, if you have never drove or at least rode in a truck you have no business making rules for trucks, hours, speed, phones, and other rules should apply to all vehicles on the roads not just trucks,
